I was reluctant to make the jump to Blu Ray because I have an older HDTV without HDMI. I had read that the downconversion of Blu Ray to send the signal out of the component ports wasn't great on ANY Blu Ray player. So I decided I wouldn't upgrade until I had a chance to upgrade my TV.
Then I found this player with the built-in Netflix Instant streaming and decided instead of buying a Roku, I'd just pay the extra and get Blu Ray in addition to my Netflix streaming. I am incredibly glad that I did. The first Blu Ray that I purchased was Harry Potter 5. And it does look fantastic. The downconversion wasn't as detrimental as I had thought it would be. But that's where the surprise comes in. I put my standard DVD of HP5 into the new LG player and it looks just as good.
Ummmmm. Before this player, I was using a high quality Onkyo progressive scan DVD player to watch my movies on. So I was outputting a progressive standard DVD image that my HDTV was upconverting to 1080i to display. It never occurred to me that the television's upconversion circuitry was so inferior to what is out today. When I put a regular DVD into my new LG BluRay player, it was like WOW! I was having a really hard time telling the difference between an upconverted standard DVD on the LG player and a true 1080i signal that I get from my satellite.
So, for me, I'm not rushing out to replace my entire collection of disks to BluRay. Anything I buy new, I'll buy in the BluRay format. But I am ecstatic at this LG player's ability to upconvert my DVD collection to a really clean image. That plus the Netflix Instant streaming and YouTube viewing...suffice it to say that I'm getting my money's worth out of this player. If you are in the market for a Blu Ray player and have been reluctant because you own an older HDTV, I say do it. And this is the player to buy!
