When I played several DVD's, I found that some discs(both Blueray and standard widescreen DVD's) showed up with black horizontal bars on the TV screen. I have an HD TV w/HDMI input. Turns out these widescreen discs also did this on my two friend's systems (Sony Blueray, and Sony Playstation). One of the Blueray discs was the new Mummy Movie (summer '09), so it wasn't some outdated disc.
Guess the director wanted a narrow screen...no vertical bars, just rather large horizontal bars. The bars turned the 16x9 picture to a 16x6.6 ratio.
I could get full screen coverage only by using the composite output, but then the picture wasn't as clear.
Since the problem seemed to be the way the orig. movie was formatted onto the disc, and not a player issue, I kept the LG player, as it played the discs just as well as two diferent Sony players. Get more detail about LG BD 390 Network Blu-ray Disc Player.
