I don't have experience with picture or sound quality of other blu-ray players, but it did not seem like there were any short comings when playing blu-ray discs. I chose this for the wireless Netflix capability and figured I would upgrade to blu-ray discs from Netflix at the same time. The setup was easy. I was a little worried b/c my wireless network did not show up on the available list, but I manually entered the name and security (WP2) code and a minute later I could watch a movie. Obviously streaming quality depends on wireless quality, we did not have any interruptions.
