I'm adding a star to this player. I've had it a while now and received at least 2 software updates. Each made it better. For example Watchmen is now syncing fine. The last update added VuDU - ([...]) which is a hi-def streaming service. The player works fantastic with it. I've watched several movies in 1080p though the player. I think that this player is extremely versatile with these features. I've also had the chance to rent more blu-ray disks and play more dvd disks on it since my first review. I really think that the sound and video are excellent. I can't imagine not having it now.

I bought this recently. Until then I had an older Sony DVD player that was going through a Sony STRDG920 7.1-Channel Audio/Video Receiver and the Sony was doing the up-converting. That worked well, in fact we were amazed at how good the DVD's looked when up-converted to 1080p and played on the V VIZIO VO37LF - 37" LCD TV - widescreen - 1080p (FullHD) - HDTV.

When I decided it was time to get a Blu-ray, I wanted something that could get movies from netflix since we rent from there. I purchased the LG BD 390 Network Blu-ray Disc Player from Amazon during one of its mark downs or sales or whatever.

I like this player. The up-conversion on DVD's looks as good or better than through the Sony, and I get to take advantage of netflix online streaming. I recommend wired connections though. The wireless worked but sometimes the speed would change due to some interference or other (this happens on the pc's once in a while too but its not as noticeable). I can't comment on Cinemanow because I don't use it. Netflix streaming is pretty cool though. I personally find YouTube a little useless and I wish the player had a better search interface for it, but it does work fine.

Blu-Ray disks look great and its nice to be able to use the DTS HD audio. The only thing I've found odd is with the Watchmen disk. There were some times when the audio was not sync'ed. Hitting pause then play worked around it. LG just came out with a newer software update which may fix that. I haven't had that problem with other Blu-ray disks. I'd like to see them add some more netcast features, maybe hulu and Amazon.

CD's sound great and if you leave the TV on, there is a pretty nice user interface for selecting tracks etc.

The LG bd-390 comes with a scaled down version of Nero media server. I've used that to look at pictures from our pc and some movies we recorded with an older sony cybershot. These worked well too although I'm really not much into slideshows.

Menu system is a little lacking to my standards and can be just a tad laggy.

802.11n gets drops / says it can't connect to Netflix frequently and I have a good router too.. but when I wired it up...everything is great.

I was all set to wrestle with an all day techno-challenge, but hooking this player up to everything and using all features took about 15 minutes with minimal use of the quickie version directions. I had an HDMI cable already connected to my 46" from my standard DVD recorder and a wired connection to my XBOX 360. I just plugged those into the LG 390 and bingo, I was looking at a very user-friendly screen to netflix, the movie in the tray, youtube, and (to my surprise) files on my computer. To connect to Netflix, they give you a little code you must insert on line at your Netflix account. Still easy. I chose a variety of "watch immediately" free movies and put into my cue. There they all are when I clicked on the Netflix option on the TV's screen. Some looked a little grainy on my 46" screen, but some were in high def. Couch potato heaven.

The YouTube is a nice little bonus when you want to kill some time. Extremely easy to navigate, to surf, with comments or in full screen.

Then, there were my photo files on my computer to access and view on the big screen. And, I hadn't even loaded the software that came with it! It just automatically made them available. Even gives you transitions for a slide show. Music and movie files are also available apparently, but I did not have any on the computer.

I have only watched one blu-ray and 3 standard DVDs, but they all looked great. The standard DVDs looked upscaled significantly. I even tossed in a homemade disk with cruise photos music . . . worked fine. There were no skips, sound issues, or anything bad. No surprises, except the pleasant kind.

I'm sure there are things you can criticize on any product, but this one is a very user-friendly, couch tater's dream. Even the remote is a no-brainer. But, it won't operate any other equipment. That's okay. Universal remotes are rarely really completely universal anyway.

I chose the LG version rather than the Samsung version with the same features. Researching shows the LG got far fewer complaints. I also wanted the 7.1 analog sound connections for my Denon sound system.

After several weeks of reading reviews I narrowed my decision, for my first Blu-Ray player, down to the Oppo BDP-83, Panasonic DMP-BD80, Samsung BD-P3600 or the LG BD390.

Oppo BDP-83 is the most expensive unit I considered but it had excellent reviews. It is considered the first "universal" player because it plays just about every format available. However, I had no need for all those formats because I will only be playing CDs, DVDs and Blu-Ray discs. Also, the Oppo BDP-83 is not wireless and I would still need to buy a Roku for $99.00 if I wanted to stream Netflix.

Panasonic DMP-BD80 Is not wireless, doesn't have Netflix and according to consumer reports has some issues playing scratched discs.

Samsung BD-P3600 Is wireless but many of the reviews I read said that it was difficult to set up.

So, the LG BD390 was the clear winner. The BD390 was extremely easy to hook up. I turned it on and clicked on the Setup tab and entered the password from my wireless network into the BD390 and I was connected. It took less than five minutes. Then, I loaded up the included Nero Media Home Essentials 4 disc. The BD390 detected the music, photos and videos on my laptop computer and put everything in folders on the BD390. This alone was worth the price of the LG over the competition. Next, I tried a standard DVD and a Blu-Ray disc and they both looked great. Finally, I set up my Netflix account so I could stream movies. I have a wireless "G" network which is now old technology but is fast enough to stream HD movies off of Netflix without any lag, and the image quality looks good.

I could not be happier with my BD390. It far exceeds my expectations. I would recommend this unit to anyone that wants excellent DVD and Blu-Ray quality, wants to stream movies over the Internet, wants to hook up wirelessly, or wants to play your music library wirelessly through your home entertainment system.

When it does connect with the router (about 20% of the time) it works great for Netflix streaming. The router is just on the other side of the wall. I'm always suspicious of online reviews that say, "I had XXX brand and it was terrible, this brand YYY is great", but I'm going to write one anyway. It is the principle context of my review, and therefore necessitates review of the machine(s) this LG is being compared to.

I started into Blu-ray a little less than two years ago with a Sony BDP-S300, a first-generation player. It was GLACIALLY slow to load disks - the player would routinely take MINUTES from the time a disk was inserted to the time you could start controlling it and watching the movie. It was also finicky about what it would play, unable to play at all a small portion of my all-official-release disk collection. I updated firmware several times, no improvement at all.

Reviews made it sound like the machine was at least as good as all others, and the BDP-S350 which followed it not much better, so we sucked it up for well over a year. Then the Sony BDP-S360 was released, and reviews made it sound like it was blazingly-fast, so I bought one.

It is noticeably faster, but still groaningly slow. It takes well over a minute to load many of our disks, and still refuses to play a few disks. But now, after three months, it won't play Blu-ray disks AT ALL! It plays DVDs without complaint, but says "can't operate this disk" when any Blu-ray is inserted! I've upgraded firmware, no improvement. I came to write this review because it irks me that Sony, the originators of Blu-ray, have sucked me into buying TWO dismal Blu-ray players!

So, long time getting to this, but I bought the LG a few weeks ago and absolutely LOVE it! First and foremost for me, it loads and plays Blu-ray disks almost as quickly as my old DVD player did... night and day compared to the Sony! It has not choked on ANY disk tried in it, including disks the Sonys could not digest. Its video quality is at least as good as the Sony's - I had fallen for Sony's claims that Sony players would look better on my Sony TV, but that's utter nonsense. It does a BETTER job of upgrading our DVDs for 1080p display, and Blu-rays look just as good. It has a terrific interface, with a wonderfully simple, clear on-screen menu. And it has a well-thought-out remote that HAS an eject button, the Sonys inexplicably do not.

When plugged into the network, it does great things too (some of these also done by the Sony). When I turned it on one day it told me a firmware update was available, and with a couple of clicks and a couple of minutes it was updated. YouTube is prominently featured on the main menu, with a click or two we are watching YouTube videos. And the player comes with software that can be loaded onto any computer on the network, and that computer becomes a server for pictures and video for the TV. It works GREAT - everything about this machine so far works GREAT!

So far my only complaint may not be the player's fault. I have told the machine in setup that we do NOT want disks to be able to access the internet and download advertising and new trailers to show us. (Note to manufacturers and would-be advertisers: we will NEVER permit this intrusion and won't buy any player that doesn't let us disable disk-to-network access.) On a few disks on the LG it has taken noticeably longer to load before displaying a warning that our player cannot connect to the network. Whether this is an issue with programming on the disk or in the player I don't know. We didn't see this message or notice extra delay with the Sony, maybe because we didn't have it on a full-time network connection. Bought a Samsung Blu-Ray player last week specifically because, besides blu-ray, we wanted to stream from Netflix. Got it, couldn't connect to the network, called Samsung and they basically said that I would have to buy their dongle to connect and, of course, it would not support my wireless network security protocol.

Sent it back and ordered this. Got it today and 30 minutes later, I was on the network streaming from my Netflix account. Mine is a Belkin wireless N+ router. What I'm seeing is problem 720p resolution but looks OK, I didn't expect 1080p on a wireless connection. With the caveat of being comfortable with adding devices to my network, this could not have been easier.

Unlike the Playstation 3, going to YouTube really lets you view all YouTube videos and choose them.
The Media Server is working perfectly, have already viewed Photos and Videos from desktop and laptop computers as well as my home server.

The picture is spectacular. But we love it for the features. I like the fact that I didn't have to run an internet connection to my family room. (I did have to add another router to use as a repeater, but that's a different story)

I never would watch the instant Netflix movies on my computer because of the location, now we watch them all the time on the TV. That is cool.

I love having access to the music on my computers from the media center, that is just what I've been looking for for years.

I've tried watching movies that are on my pc through wireless, that didn't work too well, after converting them all to avi, I could watch them from an external HD attached via a USB cable. But I wouldn't recommend it. From now on, I'll just burn them to DVD and watch it from there.

A couple design issues, why would you put the eject button on the opposite side as the disk tray? The remote could be better, but it's usable.

I just bot the LG BD-390 and so far it's too good to be true. This is my first Blu Ray DVD player and it is truly awesome. The first Blu Ray movie I have watched is the John Cusack movie, "Identity," which is very atmospheric, with lots of rain, thunder & lightning, and night scenes. The movie looks just beautiful on the BD-390.

However, I am deeply concerned because based on reading the customer reviews on Amazon of this machine and the Samsung 3600, it seems a lot of them break down during the first few months of ownership. Thus, I want to buy an extended warranty. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good extended warranty? Anyone try "Square Trade" extended warranties that are advertised on Amazon? Any other recommendations? Thanks.

SUGGESTION FOR ALTERNATIVE WAY TO DO A WIRED CONNECTION:

First, let me say that if you have a "wireless" connection and are happy with it, including the speed of streaming Netflix videos, etc., don't bother reading this. However, if you want or prefer a WIRED connection between your LG BD-390 and your router, consider the following:

For non-tech savvy people like me, I wanted to pass on to everyone an alternative method for getting a WIRED connection between your LG BD-390 and your router if your router is not in close proximity to your LG BD-390 and your HDTV. I had read posts by several people either here or on message boards who recommended a wired connection over a wireless connection in order to get the best results for streaming Netflix, using YouTube, or viewing files on your computer. Those people said a wired connection will give you faster and more clear results. In my house, there is a distance of about 30 to 40 feet between the location of my computer and router versus the location of my LG BD-390 and HDTV. I didn't want to run a CAT-5 cable across my room for a number of reasons, topmost being the eyesore and trip risk plus the irresistible chew toy attraction for my dogs. Running the cables up my wall, across the attic, and down the other wall was also very problematic.

So I explained my problem to a person far more tech savvy than I am, or at least I think he is (if I am mistaken, please let me know). He urged me to buy a piece of equipment I had never heard of it. It's called an "85 mbps Powerline Network Adapter." I bot the Netgear model. I was very skeptical when the tech guy said it lets you use your wall outlets to set up a wired connection. I did not expect the product to do what he said it can do. Well, I was shocked, pardon the bad pun, to discover how incredibly easy it is to hook this thing up. It consists of two little modules that you simple plug into an electrical wall outlet. One goes into the wall outlet closest to your computer and router, the other goes into the wall outlet closest to your LG BD-390 and HDTV. For the former, you simply run a CAT-5 cable from the module to the back of your router. For the latter, you run a CAT-5 cable from the module to the LAN port on the back of your LG BD-390. And that's it, other than doing the Setup on your LG BD-390, which is a piece of cake two (everything is automatic, it figures out the IP address and all of that stuff). Of course, be sure to also load the CD to your computer that came with your LG BD-390.

The whole process took less than ten minutes. The quality of the YouTube videos is superb, just as good as what I see on my computer monitor. Same for looking at all of my photos on my computer via my HDTV and the 390. Haven't tried to stream a Netflix yet, but doubt the quality will be any less. This product seems too good to be true, especially the ease of the connections. You end with a wired connection, NOT a wireless connection. The way it was explained to me is that your electrical wires in your house, i.e., your "powerline," end up acting as the equivalent of stringing CAT-5 cables across your room.

The only downside I have discovered so far, and it may be a big one, is that the instructions warn that you must NOT plug the modules into surge protectors.

I will start off by saying I had a Samsung BD P3600 and it had bad Seamless Branching Problems (just google it).
I now own the LG BD390 and I love it. First because it just plain Works, but also the features are better, the menus are clean and the remote is easy to use.
The picture is every bit as good as the Samsungs was.
I use a MAC and the wireless set up was a breeze ! I did a check for an update and it found one loaded it and Done with no Problems. The Samsug could Never find an update evan when there was one I had to download it burn to CD and then after scary warnings about power failure and voiding warranties..... Everybody knows this is a Blu-Ray DVD player, enough of that.

I have to write about how this unit has impressed me with features besides the fact that it can play a Blu-Ray DVD. This unit is advertised that it can connect to your home network via wireless (or Ethernet) but what it doesn't say is how well this was pulled off. First, the unit is running a Linux OS accompanied by some excellent companion software. When I booted this unit up, the first thing I did was setup the wireless network and downloaded the latest firmware update. Then I went to My Media from the default start screen if no DVD in in the player. It gave me a little warning about connecting to a wireless network may have performance issues (maybe I can disable this). Then I saw all the shared folders on my home network (multiple computers). The DVD player let me browse all our shared folders for all kinds of media. Let me tell you it does it all, I viewed pictures, played songs, watched music videos, some were HD but others were meant for iPod, so yeah it didn't look to great on a 50" TV but everything I could find played as good as could be expected.

Now for the real test. High quality videos over wireless. This is what impressed me the most. As long as your wireless connection is faster than this units need to feed on the media stream, it does wonderfully. I tested .avi files, .mkv files, mp4 files, and it eats them all with joy. I tried a wide variety of resolutions and file sizes and still it isn't picky about what you feed it. Here is a good test to know if your wireless network is fast enough to feed this unit or not (requires two wireless computers). A typical HIGH quality (720p) one hour TV show is about 1 GB, so if you can copy a 1 GB file from one device to another in less than an hour, you're in luck. Thus, in theory if you can copy over 4 GB an hour between devices you could watch a full length 1080p movie via a wireless connection. Trying this will be my next test.

Now for YouTube and actually accessing the internet with this unit, I have to say it works, but it isn't really practical. It's a great novelty item but wears off quick. Maybe someday all of our appliances will talk to the internet, but for now our best bet is to feed this unit from inside your home network via another computer. Oh yeah, did I mention it plays any media you can throw at it via the USB port in the front of the machine too? Basically this DVD player is a Linux computer with every CODEX I could think of pre-loaded. Last but not least it plays burned movies from common movie maker software. If you ever get bored discovering all the things you can do with this unit I suppose you can try playing a regular DVD, which I haven't even tried yet.

UPDATE Sept 8, 2009: I found an .AVI file that the player could not play, it showed 0 bytes. However it played on the computer fine. I converted the file to an .MP4 and it had no problem with that. I have also noticed that the video and audio begin to lose sync on some (not all) .AVI files, while .MKV files play the best every time.

My test with streaming 1080p over wireless proved unsuccessful. I ran a cable and it worked great though. So the best my wireless can do is streaming 720p resolution. All in all this is a GREAT player.Get more detail about LG BD 390 Network Blu-ray Disc Player.

I'm not often moved to write reviews, but 2 days after receiving my BD-390 I am absolutely in love. I was worried about how easy it would be to set up. My fears were completely unjustified, it was simple to set up, easy to enable the wireless and get it on my home network and a joy to use. We upgraded to Blu-Ray becuase after getting our first HDTV late last year, I was concerned that we were not getting the full potential out of our TV.

Our early Blu-Ray purchases are spectacularly gorgeous. X-Men: The Last Stand [Blu-ray], Coraline (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy w/ 3D) [Blu-ray], The Fall (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray] and Kung Fu Panda (+BD Live) [Blu-ray] are all visual feasts for the eyes. The sound also seems to be an improvement over DVD (although I admit that could just be my own excitement about the new player.

I do buy the theory that even upconverted DVDs look a little better when played on Blu-Ray players. I'm not sure if this is just the power of suggestion, I can't speak from a technical perspective. Havign said that, the picture does look a bit crisper to me when viewing DVDs.

The Streaming You Tube feature is fun. I can't imagine we'll ever use it much, but we have enjoyed playing with it thus far. I understand some other players stream Pandora, that would be appreicated in a future update. Currently I am streaming Pandora through my Pre connected to our home system, it would be nice not to have to do that. I also found it surprisingly easy to access shared media (pictures and audio) from our home computer on the same network.

The arrival of the player was well timed as my kids were home sick from school the next day. Streaming Netlfix to the rescue... the ability to stream movies straight to the TV kept my wife and kids from going stir crazy. I even added movies to the queue for them from the grocery store via my smartphone. My only complaint is that I wish the audio from netflix was in 5.1. I certainly don't expect the video to be up to the quality of having an actual disc, but I've got to believe that 5.1 audo could be done with ease.

My wife and I agreed that the streaming netflix feature was something we would have paid half the price of this player for as a standalone.

Finally, the ability to connect wirelessly is critical. Our player is upstairs in an A/V closet, our computer is in the basement. A hard-wired connection would have required drilling holes in walls etc....

What a disaster! Purchased LG BD 390 from Video Audio Center. First unit arrived and could not get the menu to pull up. Spent 30 mins on phone with LG support and they advised unit was defective. Contacted VAC, they were very helpful and they sent a replacement. The second unit arrived and again the menu would not come up. You had to start a movie and press stop to get the menu to come up. Again called LG support again advised unit would need service. Contacted VAC and arranged to send unit back for refund. VAC nor LG would pay return shipping charges. I have only had my LG BD390 for a few weeks, but I really like it. It does an excellent job of up-scaling dvd's to HD. It was easy to set up with my D-Link DIR-655 which by the way works great also. I have been comparing and researching blu-ray players for the last few months and finally decided to pull the trigger and get the BD-390. After hooking up the product (via HDMI) to my new Samsung LN52A750 TV, I instantly heard a loud crackling feedback from the TV. (By the way, the volume on the TV was turned all the way down and other HDMI components are currently attached.) This was obviously not a pleasant or desired outcome. I attempted to troubleshoot the problem by plugging into 3 different HDMI ports on my TV as well as attempting to use a new HDMI cable. Unfortunately, this did not remedy the situation. As a final measure, I tried the component video cables and the feedback issue went away. Needless to say, I want the 1080p that HDMI provides, so I called Amazon to return the unit. I have to say that Amazon has a great customer support division!

Amazon sent me a replacement unit and unfortunately the feedback issue remained. Being stubborn, I tried to adjust the audio setting on the unit with no luck. The crackling eventually did subside for some unknown reason, so I decided to set up the wireless network. I had major issues getting it to connect with WPA2 enabled on my router, so I eventually went to WEP. Once configured, wireless Netflix and YouTube worked great and I couldn't have been happier with the unit. Unfortunately, once I cycled the power, the crackling feedback returned. I contacted Samsung and LG to see if they had compatibility issues. As expected, both customer service departments were utterly useless and didn't know of any issues, nor did they really care. I did find that when I went to the YouTube icon on the main screen the screeching immediately stopped. Why, I have no idea!

All that I can assume at this point is that LG may have put out a bad batch of blu-ray players or that there is some compatibility issue. I haven't seen any other complaints about this issue, so maybe I was just the unlucky one and got two lemons. Once again I contacted Amazon and the customer service people were great!

This box has a number of really good features. The best I think is how easy it is to connect to a home network and connect to Netflix. This exceeded my expectations by far. The fact that the player auto-checks for firmware updates and is easy to do is also pretty slick. It has a neat function where it remembers where you are on a disk even if you take the disk out and play something else.

To get the best out of this box
a) Use HDMI to connect to your TV (you need this to get full 1080p anyway)
b) Use ethernet rather than wifi for Netflix etc. (picture quality when streaming is proportional to your network connection speed - Wifi is much slower than ethernet, but you'll only really notice it on high bandwidth applications like video).

I personally find the remote a little clunky and odd (for example the stop play pause buttons are small, identical and aligned horizontally together). Most ergonomic remote control designs these days align these key buttons vertically, or at least use different sizes and colors.

Note for critics on Netflix that you can only manage your queue online and not through the player - this is a Netflix feature as it is the same if you use any other players such as a TiVo Series 3. (I have both as I bought the LG before I upgraded my TiVo). However LG does have a nice feature in that you can scroll through your queue front to back or vice versa, which you can't on other boxes (this is really useful when you have a long queue)

Only bad point is build quality which is why the warranty is a telling 90 days only. At 4 months in the player stopped playing blu-rays and wouldn't even recognize when a DVD was inserted.

LG customer support is pretty reasonable (no voice-mail hell) and I paid to have it shipped back and repaired (for $70). A key part had been replaced but their QA had clearly never tested it by inserting a disk because the disk spindle now sounded like an aircraft taking off, making watching anything unbearable. I sent it back (at no cost) and have a fully working box back now. I bought this player several months ago, before updates added CinemaNow. I've had no problems with blu-ray DVDs so far, except Mad Men, seasons 1 & 2, where the DVD won't initially play, and the image isn't in 1080p since Mad Men is in 780p. Opening the load tray once or twice, and the DVDs plays fine. This seems to be a problem with Mad Men according to Amazon.com reviews.

I've tried CinemaNow, and there are a some issues. There is no chapter skip, so you have to run through the entire movie to get to a chapter, unless you stop the movie mid-play. Then the movie picks up where you last stopped. Additionally, the picture is good, but playing a blu-ray disc is a much cleaner image.

Also, I have the Roku player for Netflix, and this player's video image on this player is the same as the Roku player. Some movies are HD and look great, and some are adequate.

The Youtube option is fun, and very time consuming, but since you can subscribe to movie & television shows on Youtube, I wish this would carry over to this player. Right now it's just short uploaded videos from individual subscribers.

This player is amazing it has so many options, the menu are well designed, it has a fast startup when you insert a disc, very easy to install, netflix starts in seconds, youtube is pretty cool too. Best of all it reads divx files from a usb key, I was expecting trouble but no, everything went smoothly. I inserted my usb keu full of files, and directories, and the player found all my videos and photos right away and divx plays amazingly in fullscreen.
So far no problem except with the movie Watchmen where 4 times during the movie the sound got out of sync so pausing it and click play again would fix it. I think it was the movie as other blueray played fine.

I imagine some of the Mac/Airport issues mentioned in other reviews have to do with the user's network setup. After weeks of research, I picked up a LG BD390 and haven't looked back since.

Let me start from the beginning. I had just purchased a 55" Vizio LCD TV, capable of full HD (1080p), my old HD TV was DLP based and only capable 1080i. I was using an older Philips DVD player that up-converted to 1080i as well. But, I wanted something that could give me the full 1080p HD experience on my new TV and I wanted something that could handle files as well as BDs and DVDs. My old Philips played MP3, JPEG, PNG, AVI, WMA, DivX-HD, XVID, MKV files and more. More importantly it had a USB port that you could plug a FAT32 flash drive or external HD into and it could read those files from that instead of requiring them to be burned to a Disc. My new BD player had to have all those capabilities as well.

The BD390 had everything I wanted and more. It could read a very wide variety of files types and here's the good part. It can read those file from almost any PC, WIRELESS. Yes, it has built in 802.11 connectivity. If you don't want to use the wireless functionality, don't worry it works on standard 100Mb Ethernet too. All you need to install on the PC, if you already don't have it, is a UPnP media server such as Nero's Media home, which comes bundled with the BD390. Which means, you can browse photos, music and video clips. from a PC, without needing to burn them to a disc or hook the PC up to the TV. It has no problem displaying full size JPGs taken by an 8 Mega Pixel digital camera and it displays them in very high detail too (1080p), which is very nice. It has a handy slide show feature and it allows you to rotate and zoom in.

If you have an internet connection the BD390 can access Netflix, CinemaNow, Youtube without the aid of a PC. If your into Netflix or CinemaNow you can download movies directly to the BD390 and watch a wide assortment of new releases and older classics, for a price though. I think NetFlix has unlimited downloads starting at $7.99/mo. It's a little awkward using YouTube without a standard web browser but you adapt to it quickly. I downloaded Big Buck Bunny, a DivX-HD file from [...] just to see how it looked. While the clip was cheesy the picture quality was incredible. The BD390 had no trouble playing a file that freezes up on most of my computers. It plays Blu-ray discs well to. But after using the BD390 for a few months now I'm pretty sure ALL disc's DVD's and Blu-ray are going to be a thing of the past. With hard drive space getting cheaper than blank optical media I transferred most of my DVDs to my PC hard drive and the BD390 plays VOB files without a problem, which means you can keep them in MPEG2 format. You don't need to trans-code them. At today's HD prices your looking at less than 40 cents per film and I'm sure that's going to keep dropping. I've barely touched on what this device does.

This is definitely more than just a BD player, slightly more expensive but worth every penny.

The BD 390 works more like a computer than an appliance. It forces you to interact with it constantly, like a computer, with error messages and occasional bugs. The video/audio was good, but I ended up returning it. I replaced it with a Samsung BD-P1600, which is $50 less, and works much better. I should note that I don't use wireless, which would require a separate dongle on the BD-P1600, because I ran an Ethernet to my A/V stack (in part to troubleshoot the problems with the BD 390 below).

As other people have noted the BD 390 networking features don't work well. I've set up both wireless and wired, and in both cases the unit initially connects to your router without any problems, but then the connection goes dead for no apparent reason. It will connect long enough to pop up a notice that there is a firmware update, but then the connection will time out trying to download it. I tried several times and finally the update installed. The Netflix streaming function will download your list of movies, but then choke when you try to play them. For a unit that costs this much that is unacceptable bugginess. If the problem is that the servers are overwhelmed then they should have dedicated servers for their high-end products.

The BD 390 does not allow you to disable BD-Live. I want the movies to load as soon as possible, so I set the BD Live connection to "disallow". The BD 390 treats that option like it's an error. Every time I pop in a BD-Live disk I get a message telling me to allow the BD-Live connection (and it's not a disk menu message, it's a message from the BD 390). So my only option was to re-enable BD-Live but to unplug the network connection (which wasn't a big loss since it didn't work anyway). To offer a service is one thing but to force users to use it is unacceptable.

If you're watching a movie and you go into the DVD setup menu (for whatever reason) and then hit the "return" key, you would think it would return to the movie. Instead, it leaves you with a blank screen, like a computer desktop. You have to hit the Play button to keep watching your movie.

On a couple of occasions it popped up a message that a disk wasn't readable. On both occasions I popped out the disks to check that they were clean and seated in the tray properly but it still wouldn't read them. I had to turn the unit off/on and then it read the disk, suggesting it wasn't a disk problem it was a software problem. Essentially I had to "reboot" it.

I understand that technologically the box is a computer, but for this amount of money computer-like interaction should not be necessary. The options and services should certainly be available in the setup menu, but once you set your preferences it should work like an appliance.

The customer support is useless. Obviously some cube-farm of low-paid contract support staff who have no personal knowledge of the unit, searching through the same thin reference material you could find on the web site.

All that being said, the sound and video is good. If you have a receiver that can handle the uncompressed HD audio it's a noticeable improvement from old DVDs. (And if you have an older 1080i plasma, like I do, the picture still looks great.) 2009 has been a great year for Blue Ray players. Finally Blue ray players have come down substantiality in price and more importantly to me, have finally gotten fast. There was no way I was gonna get a player that took 1-4 minutes to play a blue ray disk. Fast play times and solid picture quality, were my priorities, and IMO there are four solid choices this year. The Lg BD390, Samsung BD-P3600, JVC XVBP1 and Oppo BDP-83 are all great fast players and all worthy of consideration.
All of these players are fast, generally within seconds of each other speed wise, and all offer great picture quality for both standard DVD's and Blue ray.
I choose the 390 in part due to good reviews and the fact the I got an LG TV. The 390, looks nice, and features some great menus that are color and easy to use. The player is fast and will play a standard DVD in about 10 seconds or less, and an average blue ray in 20 seconds or less. This is also the only blue ray player with a built in wifi tuner and the only one to use the wireless N standard, versus the slower G. You can also hook it up directly through an ethernet cable, which is how I did it.
You can plug your flash drive into the usb port, for vids, pics and mp3s. Pictures and music worked fine, but I've yet to be able to play any vids, and that's one of the knocks I have against this player. This other is not including a second usb port in back, to allow the flash drive to remain plugged in, like the Samsung and Oppo player do.
The biggest flaw of this unit is the remote, which is one of the worst I've seen for any product. It's adequate for just using the 390, but completely sucks otherwise. Too many of the buttons are small, and there is no backlighting. Worst of all is the bottom part that slides down, with difficultly, to review a bunch of tiny TV buttons that are way too small and cramped together to use. You would not want to use this remote for your TV.
Flaws aside, this is one of the fastest players, has good picture quality, good easy to use color menus, sports an ethernet and usb port, a built in wifi tuner, and features Netflix, Cinemnow and Youtube.
My first choice though was actually the 3600. It can be had for about $50 cheaper then the 390 and I like the slim profile and sleek glossy black look better then the other 3 players. The Samsung also features two usb ports, one in front and in back. The back one is useful for either plugging in the wifi dongle or a flash drive, for pics, vids, and mp3s. The Samsung also features, Netflix and Pandora. Unfortunately Samsung has a history of problems every year with its Blue Ray players, and there are a number of complaints about problems connecting wirelessly and disk compatibility issues.
The XVBP1 is a good player, and very similar to the LG without the wireless, and the Netflix, Cinemanow, Youtube. This player actually looks quite similar to the 390 and even features similar menus, though not as good. The XVP1 is about 200 cheaper and if you don't care about wireless and Netflix, this is a solid fast player and a great buy.
The Oppo is of course the videophiles player, and the best player for both Blue Ray and standard DVD's, with it's Anchor Bay processing. It plays the most formats, and also features 2 usb ports like the Samsung. It doesn't however include wireless, or features like Netflix and it costs about 200 more.

UPDATE 9/5/2009- I have yet to be able to play videos of any format from my flash drive using the USB port. Despite menus indicating it will play videos, the feature either doesn't work as advertised or is extremely limited in function. Pictures and mp3s still work fine.
The remote is so frustrating I would drop this review to 4 stars, especially since the Samsung and Oppo units have far superior ergonomic remotes. The Oppo remote is also backlit. I haven't seen JVC's remote.
So far the 390 has only glitched once on a disc, by not letting me choose between the different episodes. The problem quickly corrected itself.
None of the players I mentioned have a built in TV tuner, and I'm not sure any Blue Ray players do; which is a little disappointing cause my old DVD and VHS players both had them.
The 390 for some reason does not always hold it's place when you stop or pause the DVD. I'm not sure why, but you will have to start over half the time. The unit automatically turns off after a short time, if you aren't watching anything. The simpulink function is nice if you have an LG TV, as it will automatically switch inputs for you. However, this can also be a little bit of an annoyance if you wanted to put in the DVD, but not watch it immediately.
I updated the firmware with a wired connection. Still haven't tried the wireless connection and in hindsite probably won't have need for it. Youtube is a little clunkly to use with the remote, and gets boring pretty quick. Since I probably won't use Netflix and Cinemanow either, (I don't like monthly subscriptions), I should have probably either saved a few bucks and gotten the very similar and cheaper XVBP1, or sprung for the Oppo which has the extra USB port in back, (which would probably play my USB videos) has slightly better video processing, is slightly faster and has a far superior remote.
Overall though, I am happy with the 390. It's a very fast player and has excellent video quality.

Based on several weeks of reading online reviews from multiple sources I settled on the LG BD390. My major requirements were finding a player that streamed Netflix, has top-notch image quality, and loaded Blu-Ray discs quickly. Found it!

In less than 10 minutes I turned on the player and configured it on my network. It found the network and I entered the WEP Key - bingo - online. I then downloaded the latest software update. It took about 15 minutes to download, but completed and installed successfully.

After updating the software I went to Netflix in the menu and it gave me an activation code which I then entered on the Netflix website. 10 seconds later, activation was complete. I put Die Hard in my Watch Instantly queue, ran back to the TV, and like magic, Die Hard appeared in my Netflix movie list. Hit play and it started streaming within 15 seconds. Couldn't ask for this to be any easier!

Next I loaded Pirates of the Carribean on Blu-Ray and within 20 seconds the video playback began - completely tolerable (and better than I expected!). Picture quality is solid, sound is great (pushing it thru a Denon 7.1 receiver), and the menu system is slick and easy to use. I haven't even opened the manual.

This LG BD 390 Network Blu-ray disc player does what it says with excellent picture quality and streaming of Net Flix. I found it was very easy to set up and get connected to my wireless connection. From time to time it will stop the Net Flix movie to adjust to the networks connection speed to optimize performance however that is not too distracting as it takes less than a minute and does not happen too often. I really wasn't even looking for a Blu-ray player, but I needed a DVD player and didn't see the logic in paying money for outmoded technology when for more, quite a bit more though, I could get Blu-ray and Netflix streaming. I'm very glad I made the decision to spend the extra money.

It came down to two players for me, the Samsung BD-P1600 or the LG. I decided to go with the LG BD 390 because, unlike the Samsung, it has built in wireless b/g/n and 1GB of memory. On the Samsung you have to buy a wireless dongle and a flash USB drive for memory.

The LG is very nicely styled with only 6 buttons on the front of the unit, the playback controls that light up in blue and power and tray open/close buttons on the top edge. The display on the front of the player is very bright and fairly large. It's very easy to see. I also like the fact that when you press a button on the remote a little indicator lights up in the display to let you know. This way you don't wonder whether the player didn't get the command or if it's something you cannot do in the current mode. The remote is a decent size and has a logical button layout (see photo).

Picture quality on my 32" 720p LCD TV is great. Blu-ray discs and regular DVDs look flawless. Additionally, when you take out a disc you haven't finished watching and put it back in later, even if you've turned the player off, it will start up where you left off, nice. Netflix streams in very high quality (up to 720p HD) over my cable high-speed network. The Netflix activation process is very simple as well. My wireless router is an Apple AirPort Extreme with WPA security and the LG wirelessly linked up with it easily. You can also access YouTube, CinemaNow, and a local media server with the LG. Of these, I've only tried the YouTube player and found it worked well. Finally, updates for the player's software can be easily downloaded over the wireless network through the set-up menu.

The connections on the rear are very comprehensive and included HDMI, Component and Composite video, Digital and Optical audio, and 7.1 surround sound outputs. There is also an Ethernet port if you prefer to use the player on a wired network.

The only negative I have about the LG is that the remote is quite cheesy in construction and does not feel up to the caliber of a player of this cost. Also the player itself sounds a little strained when the drawer opens and closes. I'm hoping that this is not a sign of bad things to come.

All in all...Blu-ray, plus a seamless Netflix experience, all wrapped up in a stylish box.

Note to Apple AirPort Extreme users: Someone read my review and contacted me saying that they were not able to get the LG to wirlessly connected to their AirPort, what was I doing differently? Well after some playing around with the AirPort Extreme's settings I came to the conclusion that the LG will only connect to the AirPort when the wireless mode is either 802.11n only (2.4GHz), 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible), or 802.11n (a compatible). The 802.11n only (5GHz) setting WILL NOT WORK with the LG. I've included a photo of said setting.

This is a great unit. I bought it in spite of the fact that several people here said that it does not play nice with Apple routers. I have two routers at home, one for an 802.11b/g network and an Airport Extreme for my 802.11n network. Sure enough, when I set up the BD390 it could "see" my Verizon FiOS Actiontec router but not my Airport. I emailed and called LG. Both times I was told that the unit did not support Apple products. Then I saw a review here by Anthony Pantliano who said his unit connected to his Airport out of the box. So I emailed him. Together we discovered that the BD390 will connect to the AirPort but only when the wireless mode is either 802.11n only (2.4GHz), 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible), or 802.11n (a compatible). The 802.11n only (5GHz) setting WILL NOT WORK with the LG. So, problem solved. So far I'm very happy with the unit. NetFlix streaming is much better than I expected. As soon as I received this Lg player I put in a blu-ray in and the picture was grainy to me and I have a Panasonic at home and the picture is amazing and so I continued and put a standard dvd in and what a mess the lg was very poor picture and the other player upscaled much better. Amazing blu ray player. My waiting and research paid off. You can't go wrong with this player. The connection was easy to my 50" Panasonic Viera Plasma and the wireless connection considering I am just a novice. My LG BD390 output were all 1080p resolutions on my Blu Ray disk, regular DVD disk and my Netflix streaming video.
All my regular DVD's resolutions output were excellent almost close to blu ray disk quality. In addition, the resolutions of my Netflix streaming video even bested by regular DVD resoulutions. LG BD390 automatically adjust to its highest resolution when watching the Netflix streaming video which is a plus. Trust me, you can't go wrong with this player. Nobody does it better, you will just feel sad for the rest of other blu ray players. I don't have any issues and I highly recommend to own it.
